Chrome

Find out
Just at the very end of the 18th century a French pharmacist and chemist discovered the metal chrome. It had been discovered as a component in the Siberian 'red lead ore' and belongs to the so-called transition metals. Terminologically it is inspired by the multi colourfulness of its salts in the different oxidation steps.

Chrome means ‚colour‘ and has its origin in the Greek. It is known in the jewellery craft of the last 200 years above all as a decoration coating. By the brilliantly silver colour characteristic of chrome, rather insignificant metals like steel, cast iron, copper or even aluminium and plastics are refined. Particularly with antique and vintage cufflinks, chromium plating provides for miraculous eye-catchers and a dazzling performance. There are remarkable and elegant specimens from New York of the 1960s and 1970s to discover in our assortment.
