Glass
Glass has been part of everyday life for centuries. The majestic generic term "glass" is subdivided into countless subgroups that are of great importance in almost every part of our life. Such obvious things as windows and drinking glasses fulfill primarily a practical use. But even here you can observe that the aesthetic demands of users individually influence the design of any glass. Colors and shapes are actually infinitely realizable. Especially in the manufacture of glass in jewellery, very individual and colorful elements are created, which act as an eye-catcher on a piece of jewelry. Such silicate glasses are largely translucent and can provide stunning visual effects. In the course of the 19th century, the Biedermeier glass or crystal art, which until that date had been rather colorless, but most elaborately cut, turned into simple and colorful decors. The micro-mosaics made of small colored glass pens, which were mostly made between 1850 and 1900, are still among the most filigree examples of antique glass jewellery.
At the beginning of the 20th century, in the blossoming Art Nouveau style, glass was finally discovered for the wide production of jewellery. The infinite design possibilities that one has with glass, were perfect for the epoch-typical curved lines and floral ornaments. This diversity is on a par with the art of jewellery enamel. Also jewelry enamel is based in a broader sense on the processing of glass. A jewellery enamel artist is therefore above all a glass artist. The jewelry designers of the 1960s and 1970s, however, used strikingly cut glass stones, often in cufflinks. Genuine vintage men's jewelry from the disco era thrilled us today with his imagination and extroversion. Special designs and collectibles make up the very rare glass variations, such as Saphrit and opaline glass. In such techniques a gem or quartz are fused together during the glass forming process. Also opalescent effects are possible by glass coating. As always, there are no limits to the fantasy in antique jewellery!
